Helping other people

I heard a sound of the brakes. I couldn’t believe in my eyes, what I saw was a boy about ten years old laying on the street. My heart stopped beating. The environment surround me seemed to be in silence, even though my car was playing the radio. For a few second later, I could move my hand to open the car’s door. But my sister, who was sitting next to me, said that I should stay in the car. In my heart, I really wanted to come out there to help the boy, but my sister told me that we should stay in the car. I didn't know what to do. In my opinion, I think that was my hardest moral dilemma I’ve ever faced in my whole life. But I think my sister did that because she has her own reason. I didn’t listen to my sister and I was going out to help the boy.

On that day, my sister and I were going to Wal-Mart to buy some foods. My house are nears the elementary school, and everyday I came to work, I saw a lot of students walking on the sidewalk. My sister and I were on the way to Wal-Mart, when we stopped at the stop sign, I saw a woman was driving a car the opposite of our way. It was in the morning and a lot of students came to school by walking. The woman stopped at the stop sign. She was very careful and looked around to see the people and then she continued go. Suddenly, there was a boy walking in front of her car and she didn’t notice the boy. She was looking at the other stop signs so her car hit the boy.

My sister and I were sitting in the car. We were so astonished and shocked when we saw the boy lying on the street. He had no movement at all. His backpack was still on his shoulder. I saw that and I turned my head to my sister.

"Did you see that?" I asked. I pointed my right index finger at the boy, "Let me come out there to check the boy." But my sister didn’t let me go. She drove ahead and pulled over near the sidewalk of the street and did nothing. I said to my sister that I would open the door and come out there to help the boy. I ran over to the boy, and make his head lay on my hands. I put my hands on his chest to make him breath. I was called the police and ambulance. Everyone around that, coming and looked at the boy, and I took my jacket to cover for him, and hug him. I saw that he got blood out on his hands. After a few seconds, he was opened his eyes, and his face looked pale.

After about five minutes, the ambulance came and picked up the boy and took him to the hospital. I was thinking for the whole day about the boy. I worried what would happen to him. What if he dead?

I thought that my sister was wrong. I asked myself why she didn’t allow me to come out there to help the boy early. Besides that, my sister is an assistant for the teacher. She works at school as a translator. She translates Vietnamese and English. She helped many Vietnamese students to get into school and sometimes she didn’t accept any gifts. But how come in this case, she refused to help? Was she a coward? She always tells me that I have to help other when they have problems.

She shouldn’t have refused to help the students if they got into trouble or tragedy.  There was nothing that might harm to me and her too.

After that day when I came home, I asked my sister why she didn’t let me go out there to help the boy early. She replied to me that she couldn’t do anything to help the boy and I was still a teenager who had just come to a new country. We were not a doctor or a superman, and don’t want to get into trouble when the police came. I explained to her, and told her that we would not get into trouble to help someone.

I was so happy because on that day I didn’t listen to my sister and go out to help her. If I listen to my sister, I will regret my life in the future. On the next day, she was calling me say sorry about what she did. She understands what I explained to her and she realized that helping other is very important.

On the next day, I was heard about the boy, he was ok. I was so happy after I heard that.
